Winter Carnival 2010

On Saturday our club hosted the annual Yellowhead Regional Winter Carnival. 11 clubs attended from the region resulting in about a hundred people showing up to the event. And what a successful event it was, too!

The carnival was held at and sponsered by the Spruce Grove Gun Club. Their guys volunteered their time for the whole day instructing both kids and adults.

People who came at first deciding that they wouldn't touch a gun left not only shooting but enjoying it, too. Shooting is not the big evil thing we've all been taught to believe. The instructors at the Spruce Grove Gun Club aren't a bunch of so called "red knecks" bent on turning us all into gun wielding maniacs or worse...ahh!...hunters. They are calm, thoughtful, and patient indivuals whose main goal is to pass on the love and respect they have for firearm sport.

Clubs also brought along activities to share. There were fun and educational games, a first aid activity, fur identification, fly tying (for fishing) and archery.

We came away from the day having met people from neighbouring clubs, seeing old friends, and learning some new skills.

I want to take a moment and thank Lana from our club for taking care of the food for the day. We all thoroughly enjoyed the beef on the bun lunch. She bought the groceries, cooked and shredded the roast, and if - that wasn't enough - took care of the clean-up. THANK-YOU, Lana, for your efforts. It was greatly appreciated.

And thank-you to everyone else who came out and helped. You helped to make it an enjoyable and successful event.

Ice Fishing

What FAB-u-lous weather we had for today's ice fishing event. The sun was shining oh so brrrightly and when there was no wind it was down right warm. There was good attendance as well.

What made the event even better was that the fish were actually biting! Whoo hoo. Sure the fish were small and, as a result, most were set free to fight another day, but everyone had fun catching them.

Exclamations of "I caught one!" could be heard ringing out with regularity.

I think it's safe to say that many of our Wardens got "hooked" (hardy ha ha) on ice fishing today.

Thank-you to Ron and Kevin who organized the event, and thanks to Kevin for bringing the tents, augers, under water camera (a huge hit), and bait for everyone.

Clymont Winter Camp - January '10

The Winter Camp this past weekend was a wonderful success.

The Adventurer/Challengers (wardens 12yrs and up) had their own programming on Friday night and Saturday morning. They stayed out in the outfitter tent overnight. They were a bit chilly, apparently, but they survived! They learned map and compass techniques and are on their way to being proficient. Martin Schiebel came up with an exciting indoor course to help them with this venture and the kids had fun navigating it.

The Pathfinder/Trailblazers joined the camp Saturday morning.

They learned about some essential items to include in their backpacks for emergency situations.

During this activity they made cotton ball fire starters and tin can emergency kits.

After lunch we went outside to learn fire starting. The Pathfinders learned how to strike a match, the Trailblazers learned how to start a fire with a twig bundle, and the A/C’s were instructed how to use flint and steel. It was a productive activity.

The plan was to then use their tin cans to boil water and make hot chocolate but it was pretty cold outside so the kids moved indoors. Luckily Kirt (as usual) had an activity up his sleeve. He demonstrated (literally) the building blocks of ecosystems. The kids had fun and learned an important lesson.

Afterwards, Kirt pulled the A/C’s aside for Leadership discussion and knot tying skills.

And the P/T's got to try thier hand at the map/compass course.

After supper, we learned about the Bronze Badge which brought us to learning about the Purpose, Code, Pledge, Watchword, and Motto. Then we enjoyed a skit put on by the Schiebels about the history of the JFW.

In August we held a multi club Awareness Day at Clymont Hall to show off some of the things that the JFW does as an organization. It was a great opportunity for folks to come out and talk to the various clubs and ask questions. Each group also brought activities for us all to enjoy.

The JFW is an outdoor orientated program which is parent lead for young people between the ages 6 to 18. Parents and youth enjoy learning together during our age specific programming that is held throughout the months of September to June. Events can range from 2 hours to a weekend.

Our club is committed to providing opportunities to get outdoors to learn:

Introduction to GPS and Geocaching

Ice Fishing on February 10th

The ice fishing event on Saturday added to another success by the JFW. Thank-you to Ron and Leo Storrier who were the Event Coordinators. Great job, guys!

Everyone met at the hall and then travelled to Spring Lake without a problem. Once there, we all got geared up, and went down to the lake. For those us (me) who are out of shape the trudge was arduous. :) Once we got down there, the dads who brought the augers set to work at making us some fishing holes. The kids got the their poles ready, baited up and then got fishin'. Unfortunately, there were no fish to be caught, but everyone still had fun. The children enjoyed peering down the holes and running around in the snow. It was cold, but with the sun shining the weather seemed great.

After a couple of hours, we all made the walk back to the shelter for lunch. Hot dogs and hot chocolate were on the menu and were gobbled down by the hungry fishers. There was some fun conversation to be had as well. Soon enough, though, the cold started to set into everyone. Because of the lack of fish action, everyone decided to call it a day around 1:00 pm.

Winter Camp on Jan 27th and 28th

The winter camp held on January 27th and 28th was a wonderful success. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot.

Saturday's activities were were run by Pam from Parkland Conservation. She was so energetic and kept the children (and adults) busy all day. We started off building a Quinzy and while that settled, we tried out the snow shoes. They even had a crazy game of tag. After lunch, the children were split into two groups taking turns between learning about animal tracks and building bird houses. Thanks to Leader Dean for bringing the materials for the bird houses. Afterwards, we went back outside on the snow shoes in search for animal tracks. This trek was a long one and took up much of the afternoon. The children were excited in their quest for the best tracks. Next, we came back inside for some games and supper. Pam had a identification game for us all to play. She laid out several wildlife/plant artifacts for us all to try and identify. The children also went outside to dig out the Quinzy. On Sunday we had breakfast, packed, and cleaned-up. The children had great fun bringing down the Quinzy, but not before we snapped a picture with them all in front.

Thank-you to the organizers and the parents who helped make the event a success.

Granola Bar Recipe

This delicious granola bar recipe was provided by Leo Storrier. She brought them as a snack to this weekend’s winter camp. Thanks Leo!

Granola Bars

Ingredients:
3 cups rolled oats (not instant)
1 cup Flaked Alomond
1 cup coconut *
1 cup raisons
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips **
11 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk
¼ cup butter or hard margarine – melted

1. Turn oven to 325 degrees.
2. Grease baking sheet (rectangular bar pan for ex.) - I prefer to use parchment paper.
3. Combine ingredients in bowl and mix well.
4. Press down into baking sheet – about 1 cm thick. You can use wax paper to press down since it’s sticky.
5. Bake on centre rack for about 25 – 30 minutes until golden.
6. Remove, cool for 15 minutes. Cut into desired sized bars or squares before cool. I prefer mine in smaller squares because they have serious energy!

*Can replace with sunflower seeds.
**Could try cranberries, too.

Long Lake Weekend

At the end of October, 2006, the JFW went on a weekend long camp out to Long Lake, Alberta. Despite the cool and wet weather there was a great turn out, and we had a lot of fun.

The mess hall was a warm retreat. This is where we had all of the meals, and during down time the children played games.

The cabins were cozy when the stove was lit, but cool when it went out. It contributed to the adventure, however, and the children were excited to sleep in them.

There was a class on map & compass by the Pathfinder Leader, Adrian.

Another leader, Audra (who has taken her certification course), took everyone out canoing.

It was a wonderful weekend.
